CHROMagar™ B. cereus, 5000mL
CHROMagar™ B. cereus is a selective chromogenic medium intended for the detection, differentiation, and enumeration of the Bacillus cereus group in environmental and food samples. B. cereus is a spore-forming, toxin-producing bacterium commonly found in soil and a variety of raw and processed foods. It is a significant cause of foodborne illness, producing either an emetic syndrome associated with heat-abused starchy foods (1-6 hour incubation) or a diarrheal syndrome associated with cooked meat, vegetables, cereals, spices, and other foods (8-16 hour incubation). The chromogenic formulation enables rapid presumptive identification of B. cereus group isolates while suppressing competing flora, supporting efficient microbiological monitoring of food and environmental samples.
👉 Key Performance Features:
Rapid Results: Presumptive Bacillus cereus group colonies are easily identified after 24 hours of incubation at 30°C. Intense blue colonies on a translucent medium provide improved visual contrast compared to traditional mannitol-based media, which produce red colonies on a pink background.
High Sensitivity and Specificity: Chromogenic technology provides enhanced detection of the B. cereus group, overcoming the limitations of Mannitol Egg Yolk Polymyxin (MYP/Mossel) agar, where interpretation can be complicated by background flora. Reported performance demonstrated 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity in an independent scientific evaluation (Adria Normandie, 2012).
Simplified Preparation: Unlike MYP or Mossel agar, no egg yolk emulsion supplementation is required, reducing preparation time and minimizing variability.
Improved Selectivity and Recovery: The selective chromogenic formulation enhances recovery of B. cereus group organisms while providing superior suppression of competing microorganisms compared to conventional media.
