CHROMagar™ B. cepacia is a selective chromogenic medium recommended for the qualitative detection, differentiation, and presumptive identification of Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) from respiratory specimens of cystic fibrosis patients, including sputum, throat swabs, tracheal aspirates, and bronchoalveolar lavage samples.

Following aerobic or anaerobic incubation at 35-37°C for 36-72 hours, suspect colonies require confirmatory identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and epidemiological characterization. Absence of growth does not exclude the presence of BCC. This medium is intended as an adjunct to routine microbiological culture and is not intended for the diagnosis, treatment selection, or therapeutic monitoring of infection.

👉 Key Performance Features:

  • Rapid Detection: Highly selective chromogenic formulation enables recovery and presumptive identification of most Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) organisms within 24-36 hours, reducing the risk of overgrowth by competing flora commonly encountered on conventional media such as Drigalski agar.

  • Distinctive Colony Morphology: BCC isolates produce intense green-blue colonies, allowing rapid visual recognition and simplified interpretation.

  • Enhanced Selectivity: Effectively suppresses contaminating microorganisms, including most molds, improving recovery of target organisms from polymicrobial specimens.

  • Ready-to-Prepare Formulation: Pre-weighed dehydrated medium is reconstituted directly with distilled water. No additional supplements are required, simplifying preparation and reducing variability.

  • High Diagnostic Performance: Demonstrated approximately 100% sensitivity and 95% specificity following 24-48 hours of aerobic incubation at 35°C (Masotti et al., RICAI 2021). A limited number of non-fermenting organisms may also produce green-blue colonies and should be differentiated using appropriate confirmatory testing.
