Chameleon™ COLOREX™ Serratia prepared culture media plates by S²Media are manufactured using original CHROMagar™ raw materials. This selective chromogenic culture medium is intended for the qualitative direct detection and presumptive identification of Serratia marcescens from clinical and environmental specimens. Following 18-24 hours of aerobic incubation at 35-37°C, characteristic colony coloration facilitates rapid recognition of S. marcescens while selective properties suppress competing flora. The medium supports colonization screening and environmental hygiene monitoring, particularly in intensive care, neonatal, and pediatric healthcare settings, where S. marcescens is an important cause of healthcare-associated outbreaks. Serratia is not intended to diagnose infection or guide antimicrobial therapy; presumptive isolates should be confirmed by appropriate organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and epidemiological characterization.

👉 Key Performance Features:

  • High-Contrast Chromogenic Detection: Serratia marcescens produces characteristic intense green-blue colonies, facilitating rapid visual recognition compared with conventional MacConkey or Blood Agar.

  • High Analytical Performance: Demonstrated 100% sensitivity and 97% specificity following 20 hours of aerobic incubation at 37°C.

  • High Clinical Performance: Demonstrated 97% sensitivity and 100% specificity in clinical and environmental surveillance samples following 24 hours of incubation.

  • Enhanced Specificity: Chromogenic differentiation facilitates detection of both pigmented and non-pigmented S. marcescens while reducing presumptive false positives associated with conventional lactose-based differentiation.

  • Reduced Workload: Improved differentiation from competing Gram-negative flora allows laboratories to focus confirmatory testing on presumptive S. marcescens colonies, reducing unnecessary workup.

  • Rapid Results: Results can be interpreted after 18-24 hours, supporting timely colonization screening and response during suspected healthcare-associated outbreaks.

  • Clinical & Environmental Surveillance: Supports screening of patient specimens and healthcare environmental surfaces, including applications in ICU, NICU, and outbreak surveillance programs.
